Starboard Volvo Penta 3400rpm Tachometer and hourmeter intermittently works. Trolling for hours and then go to rev up engines and the hourmeter and analog rpm dial stuck at 500rpm and then as I cruise the RPM slowly climbs to 2000rpm while my port engine tach shows 2300rpm. Drop back down to idle at Marina and the starboard tach needle stays up at 2000 and then settles back slowly to 600rpm and the Digital hourmeter not working all the while with no numbers on digital plate like no power to it. Day later and started enging and tach still not working so shut down engine and took the panel off and switched the wires from port to starboard tach gauges and the hour meter and tach work on the port start working. Worked for a couple days cruised one day and then go out and troll on a second day a week or so apart and same thing happens with tach working in the morning on the run out to fishing grounds and then not working again as stated above after trolling for hours. Is this a Tach/hourmeter gauge issue or is this a wiring issue or sender issue from engine pickup to tach? Will try to remove wires and switch from right to left to see if this “resets” the gauge but that only worked for two days last time and I don’t expect this to address the problem. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I procured a meeting old stock 3400gauge and will put that in but would hate to ruin a new gauge that is not made anymore if this is a power/short issue. Thanks

Well done, its almost the most common cause of issues, connections and more cursed connections. Please to see you resolved it. Happy and safe boating. I am also doing big site upgrade and hope you like what you find

Closely inspect all wiring connectors for corrosion
by: Alan

John,
Thanks for the tips. Went back to trace all lines and looking more closely found one connection /clip in the four wire connector at the gauge back which was corroded. The male blades on the gauge and the four blade female block connector looked good with natural light but with a bright flashlight and multiple sets of eyes we found what we think is the issue. All other connectors were clean even the other three within the four wire female blade connection block except for the one. Salt environment and electrical wires just don’t mix well.

Not sure about this but is the tacho powered off the alternator on this model engine? Perhaps runs off pulse generator also, with flywheel magnetic pickup. Either way check the connections at the sender end as they can get loose or move out of adjustment or wire connection loose
