Engine starts up immediately and runs well at slow speeds. Sometimes when the engine is not hot the engine will preform well around 3000 RPM then it suddenly starts to lose power and backfires pretty hard, when this happens I throttle back to idle and the engine coughs to a complete stop. Engine will immediately start back up again but it quickly dies completely again. I had this problem last year and it resolved itself after I replaced the fuel/water filter. This year I had the same problem so I again changed the fuel/water filter but this time it did not improve performance at all. I have since replaced the anti-siphon and and the fuel pickup line as a precaution. Both appeared to be in good condition and my existing problem has not yet improved. The fuel pump has a high pitched whine on startup but after warming up the whine is gone. I have also checked the high pressure fuel regulator and it has some black material on top of the screen, and I cleaned it the best I could but did not seem to help at all.
Has anyone else had this issue and could help me trouble shoot the problem. I am trying to avoid buying a new fuel pump system.
