What I was meaning to say was look back at when this started, after a service? some some incident? or has it always been like this? its not a very old motor so its most likely out of warranty

If you don't leak and burn it off in exhaust which sounds unlikely then it has to be somewhere on the oil circuit. Most likely its looking into the cooling water somewhere under some pressure. When idling at the slip in calm water observe the water for any oil sheen appearing. With consumption and loss rate you state it has to be substantial leak. It only takes a poorly applied gasket or connection to create this. If this didn't appear before the servicing and now it does chances are that something was disturbed at service, and it happens on everything from commercial aircraft to motors. Perhaps discuss exactly what was done when serviced and get some clues.

You either have a good leak or loss of compression and burning it off, mostly like a leak.
