mercruiser 5.0 has power on hose but no power in water

My 5.0 mercruiser will run fine on a hose but on water no power and won't go over 10 miles an hour

volvo penta fuel pumps need to be cleaned if you have any of the fl

These motor are know to have fuel pump problems Google volvo fuel pump paint problems and you will see exactly how much every one is cleaning paint out of fuel pumps as the pump was painted in parts the inside has paint flakes inside clogs fuel flow pump starts to get hot and makes noise.
I am on the chaparral forum boat owners club often if I can help you more goodluck

No power from 5 L MerCruiser on the lake

Plugs could be fouled just enough to not want to burn the extra gas that is demanded when it is under load.
No load on prop when using a flush which requires less gas will make the engine seem to have lots of power
