engine staled out would not restart unless jumped starter

I was towing in another boat who had issues was going good my temp raised up then went down and I just died silent.I tried to turn key nothing.I then pooped the hatch took a screw driver jumped the starter it fired up.stayed running for a bit.Then stalled then I tried key nothing dead silent when turning.Jumped it again with driver it fired up ran I went to pull anchor stalled again.i tried jumping this time started smoked and fried out.i then got towed in since nothing happens on turn of key or screw driver.So gonna pull starter replace any other issues I should check.has 350 volvo penta drive ..thanks so much Michael
