Volco surges in idle

by Abel
(Miami, Florida)

Just had engine rebuilt on 2004 Four Winns with a 5.7 GXI Volvo-Penta.

Now during idle speed the engine surges. When I removedthe flame arrestor, I can see the gasoline spurting out in surges. When I accelerate, the engine works perfectly fine. No problems.

We checked the fuel filter and no water inside the fuel. Distributor cap, rotor and plugs are all brand new.

What could be causing this?

Fuel Gauge manufacturer and specs

by scott

I have a 1983 Renken and the only sign of a company name or trade mark on the dash instruments is a "T". Anyone know what company this is and what the ohm range the fuel gauge operates? The fuel gauge is non operative but when I replaced it with a teleflex it still does work.

Thanks, Scott

Alarm is for your protection
by: Capt. Willy

Many engine manufacturers design their products with a buzzer that will sound when oil pressure is low. Generally in this case the buzzer will will sound when you initially crank the engine and will cease in a few second while the oil pressure builds to a safe operating level. If so equipped, this feature should be documented in your engine owner manual.

Hope this helps.

Happy cruising,

Capt. Willy

Fuel gauge does not work

by Marty
(Cold Spring Harbor, New York)

I have a 1995 Chaparral Signature 31, and the fuel gauge has not worked since I bought it three years ago. It does register something, and it does move, but never reads more than 1/4 tank.
I want to replace the float, etc. all the way back to the tank. The problem is that I cannot find access to that area.
Can you help?

Temp Gauge reads hot but motor is cool and alarm goes off???

by Mike
(KY)

Hi there,
We just traded for a 1987 Ranger and took it to the lake today and had some issues with the temp gauge and the alarm goin of but the motor was cool...we didn't make it 300ft. The thermostats are removed, it's a 175hp Mercury...Also, there was moisture in the gauge after this happened....We would let it cool down then try it again and just as soon as it planed out, it happened again...Do you have any suggestions for this?? I'm wondering if it could possibly be the gauge or thermostat (even tho it's removed) I certainly don't want to pay 12k for a new motor...
Thanks so much!!

Instruments and/or gauges

by Chris
(Wisconsin)

I am new to boating. I have a 2001 Bayliner 185 LX with a 4.3 Mercruiser. Here is my problem...

One of two things happen when I start my boat.

1. I either have nothing on my gauges...gas needle doesnt move or the oil pressure needle doesnt move along with tach or battery meter with this situation no alarms go off.

or

2. All of the gauges work and everything reads normal...oil pressure is at 40, battery is between 12-14 and RPM read about 800 idling then the alarms start going off even though everything reads normally

Any suggestions?

I have a 1996 mercury 150 hp and I replaced the tachometer and Iam still nit getting a reading.
Should I have a voltage reading on the sending wire at he back of the tackometer when th e boat is running.
The sending wire is coming out of the rectifier.
The motor runs fine . Could the rectifier be bad?
WHAT Can I TEST TO PINPOINT THE PROBLEM.
Is the recifier stil ok or do I need to replace the rectifer to correct the sending wire?

Boat guages

I bought a used boat in which the guages were gone, so I have nothing to go off of to rewire the new ones. My questions are: Are all guages hooked up the same in all types of boats, is there a standard wiring diagram for guages that apply to all boats, and if so where can I get it and is it downloadable. My boat is a 1978 Orrion runabout

bad gas guage and motor dying...

by Mark
(Enid, Oklahoma)

87 Lund ..90 hp evinrude

I was driving boat about 3/4 throttle and it acted like it was out of gas, when i let off the throttle it came back up. It did it again while putting around and it died this time. It started right back up.
The thing about this is my gas guage is jumping all around crazy like and when the motor bogged to die at the same time both times the needle of gas guage went straight down to empty like a short and then when it came back up the motor was fine again. It sounded like a gas problem but i am thinking it has something to do with the gas guage jumping al around and shorting...
Any ideas, wishin I had a schematic...oh yeah i had about a half tank of gas
Then when I got back to ramp, I went to put it in gear and the shifter button breaks...that will be fun lookin for one of those..good ol oar

Dying Motor.
by: Anonymous

I had this problem in my boat last year. You could be running full throttle down the lake and it would die down to barely running. It started as one skip for just a second and then progressed to this. Checked everything that was fuel related. Finally found that it was a bad plug (1 of 3). Replaced with 3 new plugs, no more problem. May not be uour problem, but hope it helps.

vacuum leak
by: Bob C

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak. I'm guessing you have a vacuum controlled fuel rail and your fuel gage is vacuum operated. A vacuum leak will defeat the vacuum rails detection of the increased manifold vacuum and not adjust the fuel supply to compensate. The gas gauge is merely symptomatic of the vacuum loss. Just a guess with the limited info, but have dealt with similar issue in past, hose at fuel rail valve had crack on bottom.

Tachometer does not work

by Harry Seibert
(Navarre, FL)

Wiring from the engine, forward

Wiring from the engine, forward

I have a 2000 Glastron SX 175 Runabout that is starting to have electrical problems with the gauges. When I bought the boat about a month ago, all worked fine. First, my fuel gauge started to peg on "F" rather than displaying the correct amount in the tank. When power is off, the gauge returns to "E". I pulled the float from the tank to ensure the float was not hung and reinstalled it. I have a full tank now, so I'll have to wait to see if that is fixed. Next, my temp gauge began fluttering. This problem appears to have been corrected when I disconnected and reconnected the wiring plug in the engine compartment. Finally, my tachometer is completely dead, when the engine is started, the tach doesn't flinch. Any ideas on how to go about troubleshooting this? The wiring diagram from the owners manual is attached.

Does your battery charge when the motor is running? You may have a bad voltage reg or stator !The first thing that I would check is your grounding system and check to be sure you have 12vdc on the gauges, just because the lights on the gauges are working doesn't mean you have a good enough ground. The only thing besides the voltage reg ,rectifier & stator is the gauge itself and the wire running back to your voltage regulator.

Water leaking from instrument panel.

by Patrick McGowan
(Eva, TN)

I have a 02 bumble bee pro vee 180 that when I start the motor, a 150 mariner Super magnum that starts leaking water out of one of the instrument gauges. I think it's the water pressure for the water pump but I'm not sure. It usually stops after a few times on the lake. KY lake where I live, but since I put a lower unit on it as my old one cracked and seized up the motor. It's been leaking a lot worse. It starts as soon as I start the motor and gets worse the faster the rpm's I go. With the lower unit that came on the motor it wasn't nearly as bad as now. Any idea what it is? I'm assuming it's leaking from the small hose connected to the pressure gauge.
