2015 mercury 40 hp 4 stroke

I recently changed the oil and filter and now theres a knock seams to be coming from the top of engine, I thought I had the wrong oil filter , Ive tried two different ones both say the are replacements for the original good for all 1998 and newer 40-60 hp 4 strokes . the new ones have 6 holes the original one had I believe 8 holes , Just for giggles I put the old one back on and dont notice the knocking. Im confused
