My son ask me to help him with his 1997 Mariner 200 EFI Magnum- His battery failed while on the lake so he changed out the battery with another and the motor started right up. Now I think this is where things went wrong. He took the battery cables off while the motor was running. At that time it stopped and had not run since. Here is what I checked. 1. The fuel pump will not pump. I checked and there is 12 volts on the positive terminal and 12 volt on the neg. I am an industrial electrician so I knew then the EFI was not grounding the pump motor. I can short the pump out to ground and it works great. I thought if the pump is shorted we should be able to start the motor. We tried but it will not start or try to start. The EFI was sitting with ket switch off and is very hot. There is a load on the battery at all times. Can anyone tell me what could be wrong with this motor? Those EFI's are about $1500 to $1800. Dont want to buy that and it still wont start. Any help would be great. Thanks
