1995 johnson 25 hp 2 stroke

Just purchased 2nd hand motor which starts fine runs great for 10-15 minutes at 3/4 throttle then coughs and splutters but doesn't stall. Drop throttle down to 1/4 and im able to limp back to the boat ramp. Could it be just a carburettor issue?

Had this problem once it was bad gas. Had water in the tank and it would get sucked up. If thats not it check to see if the thermostat is working. Could be it cools down and the choke kicks on. If thats ok check the magneto, plug wires and plugs. These motors have a hot spark and something could be getting hot and breaking down. If all is ok I would then check the carb/float. Ether low/no fuel or too much. Also make sure the engine is getting enough air. Example would be a clogged spark arrestor. One more thing it could be but probably not likely would be the runaway cutoff switch. A weak/rusty spring could be a problem. My first guess would be the fuel it's ether bad or dirty. Good luck.
