1984 Yamaha 40 HP ELN not turning off.

I have a 1984 Yamaha 40 HP ELN Runs great after a complete rebuild. However it will now not turn off with either the key or removing the clip from the safety switch. There is a small light on the front of the motor which turns on when the key is turned on and it will turn off when you turn the key off, but the motor will not. I would like to check on the motor with my tester which wire is still hot when the key is turned off. Where would it be connected to the motor? I did take the cover off of the shift/speed control and key/saftey switch placement up front and checked for broken or loose wires, but found none. I would appreciate any help you could provide. Thank you!

I HAVE HAD A PROBLEEM LIKE THAT BEFORE THE MOTOR IS RUNNING TO LEAN AND MAKING THE PISTONS GLOW THAT IS IGNITING THE FUEL SO CHECK IF CARB NOT LEAKING WHERE THEY BOLT ON TO MOTOR OR THE VACUUM PIPES ARE ON CHECK CRANK SEALS OR EMAIL ME ON gavin.terwin@bmwdealer.co.za

On most boat engines there's a Shutoff Wire that essentially grounds out the Power Pack. On Johnson/Evinrude motors this is a black wire with a yellow stripe. Maybe on other motors this is a different color.

After a rebuild, this wire must not be connected through the wiring harness, all the way to the Powerpack. If it is connected, run a resistance check from your shutoff switch up front ... to the wire where it is connected to the powerpack. If it is connected all the way through, your resistance should be near zero (but not quite zero). If it shows open, find the open connection (could be the plug which connects the harness to the engine). You may have to run a new wire all the way from your shutoff switch to they power pack.
