how to disconnect shift rod on a 1997 Mercury 50 hp 4 stroke

how to disconnect shift rod on a 1997 Mercury 50 hp 4 stroke. Mine does not have a connection above the lower unit like most outboards have. I need to change my water impeller and can't get my lower unit to drop.
