Force, 90 HP, 1991, 908P91

After installing a water pump kit, and beginning to reinstall the lower unit I noticed the middle shift are was loose and could be pulled up out of it's connection to the lower shift rod.
In the manual the middle shift rod appears to be threaded.
Does anyone know if the rod is threaded, and will I have to pull the gearcase cover off to reinstall the middle shift rod.
