I started my 1996 50 hp Evinrude today for the first time in almost 6 months. It started after a few attempts, as expected, and then began to run. I had the throttle set just above idle as I was running it in my driveway with water muffs on the engine. Just as it seemed about to clear up and run smooth, it suddenly went wide open. I turned the key off but it would not die. I had to unplug the fuel line and wait for it to run out of gas, which it finally did. My question is, what could have possibly caused this?
